The new program is designed to view, process and edit still photos and video. The overall user interface is similar to ViewNX-I and Capture ND-D, but does improve the menu structure into a more Lightroom- or Capture One-inspired workflow for easier ingestion, sorting and editing. Menu items and terminology have also been chosen to match that of Nikon cameras for a more uniform user experience.
Nikon has also included baked-in support for transferring images to its image sharing and storage service, Nikon Image Space. Hate this new version. Sure it's loaded with options and bells and whistles.
BUT a simple, good, "save as" option in no where to be found. Unless I missing something, I much prefer the older versions. Nikon has now released version 1.
Unfortunately, it is imho still lagging behind Capture NX-D. It appears to me the software has become a tad faster, but No advanced noise reduction possible.
No scrolling with the mouse wheel, easily gets confusing when several elements are activated. Capture NX-D always shows the "headlines" for a quick jump to the relevant element. Wrote about this to Nikon month ago but it appears I am the only one having an issue with this. Just gave it a try and I must say it's very slow and laggy. The same issues as the previous Nikon softwares, to me at least. Nikon should do an agreement with Capture One. Their software is the best in my opinion.
I used to work wtih the old Nikon Capture, than Nikon discontinuted it so I had to use and to learn a new software That software was developed by Nik Software no connection to Nikon despite the name but they were bought by Google, so Nikon had no choice! Google made the Nik Software suite free for some time. Nice to have a real Nikon RAW decoder to get the best colors. This beats the latest version of Photoshop in my testing.
That one I had to purchase a license for and this one is free! Thanks Nikon! The only way that adjustments contrast, brightness, whatever can be made while having the preview follow along smoothly is by running the software on the laptop with the large screen disconnected. I'd be interested in knowing if others have had similar performance issues. Why in doesn't a "new all-in-one image management and editing program" use your computers my imac zero GPU usage GPU?
I don't think I'm the only one who has actually used this app and found that you cannot undo an edit but only revert back to original. I'm hoping it's a glitch which can or will be be corrected but if not its a serious deal breaker. I can't imaging Nikon not having this feature though. I don't know if we're talking about the same thing here - are you referring to the fact that the undo and redo menu items appear to be permanently greyed out?
DeltaFoxtrot, Yes, greyed out and non functional along with any keyboard control such as command Z. As I said I hope somehow its there and I'm missing something but hard to imagine why its greyed out. This is rather surprising, as one would have expected these things to come to light during the debugging of the software. When an edit is made the edit box turns yellow with a checkmark which you can uncheck. Ok so unchecking this will undo all edits. A keystroke shortcut would be better for individual edit undo's imo.
I'm spoiled using any software which enables using brushes to selectively apply and remove edits. There is no substitute for this feature however not many apps have it. I just came on here looking for this very topic.
Not being able to just click on 'undo' is quite frustrating. No, it is a real word in English. However it means to approve officially, as in certification, so it is misapplied here. I've only come across the term in connection with car models that qualify for car racing. Wonder whether the reviewer wasn't think of homogenizing which would also be wrong but conveys the idea of two apps merging into one. I think he meant to use 'homogenisation', but that's still not really the correct word for the situation he was trying to describe.
I believe the actual word he was searching for is 'amalgamation'. Fast and stable. But again, a text editor is missing to quit totally with other software. You need to compare for yourself just how much difference the relatively minor tweaks to the fonts and colors make to the interface, but it really is night and day. Downloaded and installed it. NEF on latest macOS.
App crashes without warning. Tried it 10 times. I am so tired of lousy software, so I uninstalled it and keep using RPP Raw Photo Processor, only for Mac , which is extremely stable, fast and precise. I would rather write my own software than use RRP. Glad you like it though. The more options the better.
Huh it works great for me. I did trash all my old nikon software first before installing this. Then reboot. Try that. Mine works.
A lot to learn. I like simple things like an "uncheck all" that is easy to find. I'll try it - like I try heaps of other programs for transferring, cataloguing and post-processing my photos. But I haven't enjoyed its predecessor. It won't work on large numbers of images, you have to shunt them through a few at a time. There are heaps of far simply, more reliable and more effective programs to do it. I wish they could improve the speed too.
It is so fast now that I'm really happy with it. The biggest issue before was that Capture NX-D was quite slow at rendering large images. The startup is slow not a big problem but rendering relative big pictures and the changes is too slow for me. What a shame, it look like a nice software. Darktable 3. RawTherapee hasn't been updated in more than 12 months, but that's very good freeware if you're looking for extraction and cataloging.
Lightzone, also freeware and last updated Dec. There is also ART. ART is a derivative of the popular RawTherapee, trading a bit of customization and control over various processing parameters for a simpler and hopefully easier to use interface, while still maintaining the power and quality of RawTherapee. I've been playing around with Studio and believe it is a nice improvement over Capture NX-D for speed and user interface.
Studio does not, you have to export it to TIF first. I agree. In my case I want to open Affinity with 16 bit tiff. In general I welcome the new application. Already at v 1. Let's hope that minor niggles are soon addressed. Digital Tyke, I went to Nikon Support and opened a question. I used it to describe this issue and asked them to fix it. You may want to do the same. More is better.
Did anyone noticed that this software also allows to create "Albums" to organize groups of photos? So why invest ever more money into already perfect things like lenses, resolution or AF performance, if the pain of users lies somewhere else?
Kudos Nikon for offering NX Studio! Do you hear yourself? I understand that Nikon is interested in supporting Nikon cameras.. Phrases are lacking details, even camera brands are not specified, terms are wrongly used.. Useless discussion.
